Welcome to the CHI (Comprehensive Health Innovations) Medical Center! The founder and medical director Elizabeth Chen Christenson, MD, is known throughout Northwest Ohio as a devoted and caring licensed female physician since 1994. CHI Medical Center was established in 1994 in Ohio as an integrative resource for patients seeking a more holistic approach to wellness and healthcare. The center evolved from the concept of the life-force symbol of the CHI = (Comprehensive Health Innovations) and the contemporary infusion of that into health and healing. Services offer synergistic treatment modalities that combine Eastern philosophies and techniques with Western technology and nutraceutical research to create an individualized healing program. In June 2004, CHI Medical Center relocated to the island of Oahu with the vision of bridging Eastern and Western medical knowledge bases and establishing a landmark center for complementary treatment options and educational outreach to the medical community and the general public. A main emphasis is to generate professional peer level forums on the integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Western allopathy as well as seminars for laypersons to achieve a more effective form of healthcare in the US.
Although Dr. Christenson is licensed for medical acupuncture in the State of Ohio, Hawaii State is the only state in the entire U.S. that does not recognize the Medical Acupuncture license for US physicians. After she moved to Hawaii, she spent two and a half years studying acupuncture and oriental medicine at the Institute of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ICAOM) in Honolulu, where she received a Degree of Master of Science in oriental medicine and passed the National Board Exam in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine sponsored by National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). She received her acupuncture license and became a Diplomate in Acupuncture in December 2006.
In addition, Dr. Christenson is board certified in holistic medicine, medical acupuncture and anatomic and clinical pathology, and is a Diplomate and Fellow of the American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine (ABIHM), a Diplomate and Fellow of the American Board of Medical Acupuncture (FAAMA), and a Diplomate and Fellow of the American Board of Pathology - Anatomic and Clinical (FCAP). She is an Associate Clinical Professor of the Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM) Department of John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii in Manoa, Associate Professor of the Institute of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in Honolulu, a life-member of the American Medical Association (AMA), a member of the Hawaii Medical Association, the Honolulu County Medical Society, the American Association of Oriental Medicine, and the Global Federation of Chinese Business Women - Hawaii Chapter. She is also serving on the Board of Directors of Sounding Joy Music Therapy in Hawaii. She is the author of a chapter entitled “Five Element Music” for the book Harp Therapy Cradle of Sound, Emerald Harp Production, 2007.
Her approach to the patient is based on respecting the total person with individualized treatments that incorporate the best of Eastern and Western medicine. With a diversified cultural background and command of three international languages (English, Chinese and Italian) she is active in multi-cultural community health services and is devoted in bridging the best of Eastern and Western medicine, spirituality in medicine as well as music and medicine. Dr. Christenson has been invited to lecture on various medical topics and alternative and integrative medicine for television specials and professional as well as community conferences. In addition to her holistic medical practice, she teaches traditional Chinese healing techniques known as tai-chi and medical qi-gong in the Wellness Lifestyle Medicine Center at Castle Medical Center in Kailua, Hawaii, and is an accomplished musician, specializing in the harp. She provides healing harp music to the hospital staff weekly prayer service at the Castle Medical Center as well as solo and bell choir at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Kailua. In addition, Dr. Christenson is organizing a series of educational programming of alternative healing modalities lead by CAM Department of Hawaii Medical School link with the Telecommunication Department of the University of Hawaii via Olelo Community Television - the PEG (Public, Educational and Government) Access provider in the Island of Oahu. She holds a certificate of Certified Therapeutic Harp Practitioner (CTHP) through The International Harp Therapy Program.
With duo Degrees and Board Certifications in both Eastern and Western medicine and duo professorship at the medical school of the University of Hawaii (Western medicine) and ICAOM (Eastern medicine), she will be able to accomplish an important task of bridging the best of the East and West medicine, spirituality in medicine as well as music and medicine in the 21st century.
Dr. Christenson is married to anesthesiologist Edward B. Christenson, MD, and is the proud mother of son Chancey, a recent college graduate who is entering into medical studies.
