Don't stay just one night!
Staying one night in a location doesn't give you "two days" there; it gives you two travel days with some sightseeing en route and at your destination, between schlepping luggage in and out of your lodgings place. Given the size of Hawaii Island (4,038 square miles/10,458 square kilometers), it takes about three hours to drive from one side to the other. If you decide to visit HVNP, and you drive over from Kona or Waikoloa, you could visit the Park before checking in, then after dropping off your luggage, you could have dinner. If you want to see the lava entering the ocean, you'd drive an hour down into lower Puna, walk out to the viewing area, stop in Phoa for dinner, then drive back up to Volcano Village; the next morning you'd have to pack up and leave. You could perhaps visit the Park again but with luggage in your car, with a long drive ahead of you to the other side of the island.
If you stay two nights Volcano, that would give you one full day in which to explore the Park and do a hike, as well as going to the viewing area in lower Puna, on either the first or second night, relaxing on the other night, or perhaps visiting the Kilauea summit area to see the glow from the lava pond, currently two-hundred meters below the floor of the Halemaumau pit crater. A three-night stay would give you a second full day, allowing more time to do additional hikes, see more of the Park, or perhaps, Hilo ("hee-lo") town and the waterfalls along the Hmkua Coast, or the Ka District, with its black and green sand beaches; Volcano Village is well located to explore the east side of the island. Most of our guests who have stayed two nights have wished they'd stayed for three.
