... to the web site devoted to the Mediation and Arbitration practice of Dan Bent.
Dan Bent is a former civil litigation attorney and former United States Attorney. He practiced law as a litigation attorney for 27 years from 1974 to 2001. He is a member of the Distinguished Panel of Neutrals of Dispute Prevention and Resolution, Inc. Dan has been honored by selection for "The Best Lawyers in America" in Alternative Dispute Resolution for his work as a mediator and arbitrator. He is a former President of the Association for Conflict Resolution - Hawaii Chapter, and the Mediation Center of the Pacific selected him as "Mediator of the Year."
Dan now devotes his practice involving disputes to mediation and arbitration and no longer represents parties in litigation. His mediation and arbitration experience includes the successful resolution of commercial, business partnership, engineering services, labor, employment discrimination, medical professional, personal injury, and legal malpractice cases. He is particularly interested in the challenge of mediating commercial cases involving engineering and technology issues as well as cases in which the parties and/or attorneys feel that the case "will never settle."
Dan Bent is a graduate in Mechanical Engineering and received his law degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He has taught advocacy at the University of California Hastings College of Law's College of Advocacy in San Francisco, CA., the Advocacy Institute in Washington, D.C., the National Institute for Trial Advocacy and the American Bar Association. During his former career as a litigation attorney he was responsible for more than 12,000 civil and criminal cases. Previously he was a patent examiner in the Special Laws Administration Group of the United States Patent and Trademark Office and worked for the Naval Ship Research and Development Center representing its scientist-inventors before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Dan has been a principal instructor for the ABA Intellectual Property Law Section's Patent Litigation program. He is also a member of the Intellectual Property Section of the Hawaii Bar Association since 1998 and has been elected to membership in the national honorary engineering societies, Tau Beta Pi and Pi Tau Sigma.
Dan has served as the president of the Friends of the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii, president of the Rotary Club of Honolulu and member of the boards of the Hawaii Bar Association, Aloha United Way and the Eagle Scout Association. He currently serves as Board Chair of Read Aloud America.
Dan has received recognition for his leadership on important public issues and has been a guest on 60 Minutes as a result of such leadership. His work has been featured on the Larry King Live television program and he is the author of model law reform legislation that has been adopted in California, Illinois, New York, Michigan, New Jersey, Hawaii and other states. As an undergraduate Dan conceived and organized a university-wide three-day seminar which was credited with bringing diverse and sometimes "embattled" campus administrators, faculty and students together. The amazing result --- those that attended learned that there can be understanding and respect even among people who strongly disagree with one another. Dan brings the skills developed through such experiences and activities to his mediation and arbitration practice.
Dan has participated in many hours of formal training in the mediation, arbitration and facilitation of disputes as a student and later as a trainer. During his tenure as a United States Attorney his responsibilities included the informal mediation of disputes among governmental agencies.
Dan handles his own scheduling calendar.
