John D. Boyer, M.D. is board certified by the American Board of Dermatology and is an Associate of the American College of Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology. In addition to specializing in Mohs micrographic surgery, Dr. Boyer has expertise in the area of facial reconstruction after skin cancer removal. Prior to opening his private practice in Honolulu, Dr. Boyer was appointed Dermatology Consultant and Mohs Surgeon for the Office of the Attending Physician at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., serving members of the U.S. Congress, Supreme Court, and Executive Branch.
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. It is estimated that one in four Americans with fair skin will develop skin cancer over their lifetime. Hawaii has one of the highest incidences of skin cancer in the country. Fortunately the vast majority of these cancers can be effectively treated.
Mohs Micrographic Surgery is the most modern, accurate, and highly specialized treatment for the total removal of skin cancer. Mohs surgery is named in honor of Dr. Frederick Mohs, the physician who developed the technique at the University of Wisconsin in 1936. Mohs surgery is unique because it is the only treatment for skin cancer which provides complete microscopic examination of all the tissues removed surgically, in addition to providing detailed microscopic mapping techniques to pinpoint and track skin cancer.
