Summer's Gone: Holiday Sales Keep Retailers Preoccupied
Summer is long gone. Theres a nip in the air and that means retailers across the country are preoccupied with just two words: holiday sales. Last year at this
time, we feared our customers wouldnt be quick to open their wallets. Luckily, 2010 fared better. Customers restored their confi dence in the economyalbeit mildlyand began to buy old favorites and sample new products as affordable luxuries. Still, consumers are careful, paying special attention to each buying decision they make; they have limited dollars to work with and will try to make each gift they spring for worthwhile.
That is why on the following pages of our Holiday Guide you will see an array of gift boxes, across many price tiers, appealing to a broad range of targeted consumers. Not only do they come packed with a range of extras from branded glasses to recipe books, butthey are striking to look at. When consumers are in your store, eager to fi nd just the right holiday gift for a family member, friend or colleague, they can be overwhelmed by selections. Here, weve tried to help YOU with your selections. Even though more people have returned to bars and restaurants to order a drink, the at-home entertaining trend continues to fl ourish. These gift packs leverage that trend, making it easy for customers to just tear open their box and whip up a simple cocktail in their own kitchen. However, these gift packs wont sell themselves; if you really want to make an impact and move inventory, make sure that your sales staff is engaged and can speak enthusiastically and knowledgeably about the goods stocked on your shelfits the difference between an average and blockbuster selling season. Cheers!

How to better serve your most important customer
Jordan Salcito knows how high-end wine drinkers operate. As the sommelier at East Hamptons Nick & Tonis and former sommelier at the four-star Eleven Madison Park in Manhattan, shes seen her share of four-figure wine tabs, and some of her most wine-enthusiastic diners are women. One of my biggest spenders at Eleven Madison would request something good and red and trust me to choose for her, she recalls. She had tremendous confidence in her wine knowledge, price was never an issue and she preferred to deal only with a female sommelier. What Salcito describes reflects important changes in the way Americans buy wine, but the shift is perhaps most dramatic amongst female consumers: Women are more educated about wine than ever before, they spend a lot of money on it and they prefer to drink red. Yes, womenboth as wine drinkers and as wine professionalshave come a very long way, and the industry is still struggling to catch up.
Why Women Matter
Women are estimated to purchase over 70% of wine sold at retail in the U.S. and account for half of the high-end wine purchases as well (wines over $15 a bottle). So, with the current channel shift from on-premise to off-premise, women have become even more important consumers and there has understandably been a rush to serve this critical growing market. We asked retailers, experts and suppliers
to weigh in on what works and what doesnt work when it comes to selling wine to women:
The Reason Cutesy Often Fails
Suppliers and marketers have unleashed a flurry of labels unabashedly aimed at women (Little Black Dress, Promiscuous, Bitch, Working Girl White, Mad Housewife, White Lie, Girly Girl, Seduction, Bootleg, Middle Sister Wines, and Brown-Formans One.9 and One.6 low-carb wines, among many others). Some have caught on, but many havent. When something is too cutesy and overly feminine, women have no confidence in it. It lacks subtle quality cues and comes across as having no substance or credibility, says Wendy Nyberg, senior director of marketing, Sutter Home Winery, who has worked in the industry for 23 years. Women are smarter than marketers give them credit for. At the end of the day, women want to spend their money on quality. Download full article>>

Courvoisier is steeped in history. Legend has it that Napoleon Bonaparte visited the Courvoisier warehouses in 1811 and later took several barrels of Cognac with him to St. Helena. English officers on the ship much appreciated the treat and named Courvoisier, The Cognac of Napoleon. Since it was founded in the early 19th century, Courvoisier has been making some of the worlds finest Cognacs. The hand-crafted traditions are still practiced, from grape to glass, including the use of select growers, micro distillation, hand selection of oak and blending by taste not formula. Yet for generations, the House of Courvoisier has been known for innovation and revolutionizing the craft of making Cognac. Theyve done it again. In October of this year, Courvoisier 21 and Courvoisier 12, released under the banner of the Courvoisier Connoisseur Collection, were introduced into the market. The new marques challenge traditional perceptions of Cognac by declaring age upfront in the name and on the label. See recipes on the right.
