Welcome to Tasaki TMJ Headache Center
The Tasaki TMJ Headache Center specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of headaches, neck aches and jaw aches associated with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), or jaw joint. TMJ, or more properly TMD (temporomandibular disorders), affects one in three people. One in ten have severe signs and symptoms that may include noise in the jaw joint, clenching of the jaw, tight neck and shoulder muscles, pain at the base of the skull, headaches and nausea.
Dr. Mark Tasaki was featured in the June 2005 Honolulu Magazine section of best dentists in Hawaii
Traditional medicine treats headaches from a symptom-based approach (i.e. with prescription medicines). The Tasaki TMJ Headache Center focuses on a cause and effect approach. A typical patient has a disc that slips out of place within their TMJ. This causes an increase in jaw muscle tension with a reciprocal increase in neck and shoulder tension. The prolonged muscle tension can be exacerbated by stress, causing inflammation at the origin and insertion points on the muscles. The inflammation presses on nerves, causing muscle tension headaches, neck aches and jaw aches.
Dr. Mark Tasaki and his brother, Dr. Todd Tasaki, use a three-fold approach to treating TMJ. They relieve stress on the jaw joint and teeth with orthotics; they address the muscles and nerves attached to the jaw and the back of the skull; and they investigate possible causes of stress in patients lives that may be aggravating the TMJ. If the joint inflammation can be reduced, the condition will heal just like any other joint in the body.
