How I Work
I believe strongly that therapy must be tailored to the particular needs and strengths of each individual. I think it's most important to thoroughly understand other's situations from their perspective before forming ideas and interventions of my own. Most people have the ability to either create or decide upon solutions; my job is to help clients gain the clarity to do so. At the same time, I often offer specific recommendations with client's goals in mind. I approach psychotherapy as a collaborative conversation between clients and me.
Foremost in my philosophy is that people are fundamentally good and have the natural ability to grow toward their fullest potential. An objective, trained professional can often provide a catalyst for successful adaptation to life's challenges. It is a privilege, honor and responsibility to work with others toward their personal goals of enhancing health, productivity, and the enjoyment of life!
I see individuals from very young children to the elderly as well as couples, families and other small groups. I work with a wide range of issues including adaptation to stressful circumstances, conflicts, parenting issues, and longer term situations such as recurring behaviors, mental retardation, phobias and schizophrenia, to name only a few. Mood difficulties (such as anger, depression, bipolar mood states) and anxiety issues (trauma in particular) are my subspecialties.
Therapy is an investment in time, energy and money. It can be hard work, enjoyable, and rewarding at the same time. Each person's experience is different.
I'm a licensed clinical psychologist, and I specifically trained to be a therapist at the doctoral level. I have chosen to be a generalist with depth in several areas, specializing first in adult treatment during my graduate school training, and then working exclusively with children as a post-doctoral fellow. The following year, I worked in the public schools as a psychologist. During training, I worked with clients with a broad range of issues, and expanded my skills in understanding them and intervening with eclectic, appropriate, and flexible strategies. For a more complete accounting of my training, you can view my curriculum vitae.
Finances I accept most insurance plans including HMSA, HMA/HMN, HMAA, TriCare/Triwest, Kaiser Permanente Added Choice, UHA, Pacific Administrators/Hawaii Laborers, MDX/Queen's Health, Aetna, UMR, & Coventry.
I also accept credit cards and personal checks. I no longer accept Medicaid or Quest or Medicare.
