Dr. Stanley H. Masaki graduated from Washington University School of Dentistry in St. Louis Missouri and received his orthodontic training at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. Shortly after leaving school, he took a special course in non-extraction orthodontics presented by an instructor who showed some amazing results in developing space for crowded and irregular teeth in order to create a beautiful smile. Since that time Dr. Masaki has been treating most of his orthodontic patients without removing any permanent teeth for over twenty years.
There are many benefits to non-extraction orthodontics. Treatment time is usually shorter, patients have all of their teeth, they look better with a natural, full smile and excessive spacing between their teeth in later adult life is greatly reduced. If the upper teeth are protruding, this protrusion can be reduced by the use of elastics or a headgear worn at home. In a younger person, if the jaws are small and narrow, they can be made to grow larger to a more normal size by special expansion techniques in order to accommodate all of the teeth to produce a wonderful smile.
These are before and after models of some patients treated by Dr. Masaki. These patients did not have any teeth extracted in spite of their crowded and irregular teeth in small and narrow jaws. Using well-known expansion techniques, the upper jaws especially, were made to grow larger when necessary, to accommodate all of the teeth. Treatment times were usually quite short and the patients ended up with nice, full smiles.
Dr. Masaki also specializes in TMJ treatment and correction of dental bites. Many people are not aware that an improper dental bite can cause these symptoms:
These symptoms are collectively called "TMJ" or a malfunction of the jaw system, usually due to a bite problem. He feels that major headaches like migraine, cluster, and tension types, may also be bite-related.
In 1985, Dr. Masaki developed an improved method of sculpturing and reshaping the chewing surfaces of the teeth to alleviate the symptoms of TMJ. This painless procedure gives the patient a dental bite tune-up so that the teeth and the jaw joints work together in harmony like a well-tuned engine. His rate of success in treating TMJ symptoms is extremely high after doing bite adjustments for over 20 years. A description of this technique is found in these Web pages.
Dr. Masaki usually does not use dental splints to treat TMJ as he feels that this is a mechanical problem and the dental splint does not address the true cause, which lies on the chewing surfaces of the teeth.
