Most of you who attended college or university in the United States remember that the courses numbered "101" were always the "intro" courses to any topic, the ones that provided an overview of that field or discipline. You took these courses to help you figure out whether you wanted to learn more. In this article we'll try to create an "intro" course for vein disease.

What vein disease IS

The first thing you should know about vein disease is that it's a real disease. Many people think that vein disease is only about varicose veins and spider veins, and that they are only cosmetic problems, not something that requires treatment. Some vein diseases like deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can even be fatal, but even if they aren't they can cause a great deal of physical pain, suffering, and disability.

Vein disease itself – the phenomena that cause veins to become diseased – is almost always hidden from view beneath the skin. Visible symptoms like varicose veins are a rarity, and vein diseases such as DVT may not have any visible symptoms at all. The most common of these hidden causes is chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), a condition that causes the tiny valves that control venous blood flow to become "leaky" and allows blood to flow backwards and pool in the veins. CVI causes veins affected by it to swell and become varicose, but it also impairs your overall circulation and causes complications such as painfully swollen legs and ankles, chronically tired and weak legs, and increased risk of developing other conditions such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

What vein disease is NOT

One of the things vein disease is NOT is "a woman's disease," as many people think it is. Yes, more women than men develop vein disease for hormonal reasons, but 45% of men over the age of 50 will develop some form of vein disease. Vein disease is also NOT "just cosmetic," something that is unattractive but does no real harm. Vein disease does a great deal of harm. Third, untreated vein disease does NOT "get better on its own" if you ignore it – it gets worse.

Fourth (and finally providing some good news), vein disease is NOT the end of the world. Modern vein disease treatment in Monmouth County uses painless, minimally-invasive treatments that allow your Jersey Shore vein doctor to eliminate the diseases quickly, easily, and in the comfort of our Monmouth County vein clinic.

So now that I've had the "intro course," how do I find out more?

If you are interested in finding out more in-depth information about varicose veins (the "advanced courses," so to speak), we recommend that you spend some time looking over the articles on our website at http://www.njveinandlasercenter.com/. If you want to know for sure whether you have DVT or one of these "hidden" vein diseases, we recommend that you call our Monmouth vein specialist at 732-403-3899 to make an appointment for a venous health screening. These screenings take only about an hour, after which we can recommend the most effective ways to treat vein disease if you have it or help you prevent it if you don't have it yet.
